Speas Hatchery Superintendent Gordon Townsend Retires after 29 Years of Service

05/14/2012

CHEYENNE - Gordon Townsend, superintendent of the Speas Fish hatchery near Casper, recently retired after more than 29 years with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

He was raised in Casper graduating from Kelly Walsh High School and then attending Casper College, where he studied zoology. After Casper College he attended the University of Wyoming, earning a bachelor’s degree in zoology and fisheries.

Over his career he has been stationed in several areas with the Game and Fish, starting his career in 1983 as a fish culturist at Speas after working temporary jobs for the Casper fisheries management crew. He was later promoted to assistant superintendent at the Como Bluff Fish Hatchery, transferred to the Story Hatchery, then Dubois as assistant superintendent before coming to Casper, where he finished his Game and Fish career as superintendent at Speas – the largest fish rearing facility in Wyoming. Recognizing this effort, Townsend was honored with the Casper Peer recognition award this past year.

WGFD Fish Culture supervisor Steve Sharon said that Townsend has worked beside countless personnel in the Casper, Laramie, Sheridan, and Lander regions while working at Speas, Como Bluff, Story, and Dubois hatcheries, as well as other operations throughout Wyoming.

“His recent accomplishments during the extensive construction project at the Dan Speas Hatchery over the past six years will long represent Gordon's eye for detail on construction and concern for the finished product,” Sharon said. “Through his efforts, Dan Speas Hatchery is one of the most modern fish hatcheries in the Rocky Mountain region, nearly tripling its pounds of production and will greatly benefiting anglers throughout Wyoming far into the future.”
