Tularemia or rabbit fever is a zoonotic bacterial disease that is found throughout the United States. This organism has one of the broadest host ranges of all bacteria,but is primarily a disease of lagomorphs and rodents. Tularemia is a contagious,acute disease that can be an important zoonotic pathogen. Extreme caution is advised when handling tularemia suspects; field necropsies are not recommended.
