A Walk-in Area (WIA) is a tract of private land or inaccessible public land on which the Wyoming Game and Fish Department has leased rights for public fishing enjoyment. Public access to a Walk-in Area is limited to fishing only during the time period and only for the specific species agreed upon by the landowner and the Department.


The Wyoming Game and Fish Department currently maintains ten fish hatcheries and rearing stations.

Fisheries and hatcheries crews across the state compile a newsletter for their locality, providing valuable information regarding not only what they are doing, but also providing information on local fishing hot spots and conditions.
The 2003 Wyoming Legislature approved the creation of an annual Wyoming Free Fishing Day, to be designated by the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission, as part of the National Fishing and Boating Week.
