Spring Into Yellowstone Tours Offered

4/17/2014

CODY - The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is partnering with the Cody Chamber of Commerce and other local agencies and organizations to offer tours as part of a birding and wildlife festival in Cody May 14-18.

Spring into Yellowstone Birding and Wildlife Festival offers guided field trips and interactive seminars led by regional biologists and local experts in birding and nature photography.

“This is a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy the scenic vistas and abundant wildlife Cody has to offer,” said Tara Teaschner, information and education specialist with the Game and Fish. “It is also a great opportunity to spend time in the field with local experts and discuss management and conservation issues relevant to our area.”

Game and Fish personnel will participate in three tours this year. On May 17, participants can join Game and Fish Terrestrial Habitat Biologist Jerry Altermatt on a family friendly interpretative hike on Cody’s own Paul Stock Trail. Participants will learn about the flora and fauna found in the area and proper outdoor ethics along river corridors.

Martin Grenier, Game and Fish nongame mammal biologist will lead tours titled “Wings of the Night” on May 17 and “Raptors of the North Fork” on May 18. Participants on this tour will visit a local bat cave, discuss management and conservation issues of bats and their habitats, and have the opportunity to observe survey equipment commonly used to detect and capture bats.

On May 18, Grenier will lead a tour along the North Fork of the Shoshone River (Hwy 14/16/20) to observe raptors that nest in the area. The tour will visit nesting sites of peregrine falcon, golden eagle, osprey, and bald eagle. At each stop, participants will have the potential opportunity to observe these magnificent birds while discussing conservation history, current status, and management approaches for each species.

Preregistration is required for all tours. To register, visit www.springintoyellowstone.com. For more information, contact Tara Teaschner at 307-527-7125 or tara.teaschner@wyo.govor Tia Brown at the Cody Chamber of Commerce at 307-587-2777 or events@codychamber.org.
