Antlerless Elk Hunters Wanted

09/22/2012

CODY - The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking hunters with area 61, 62, and 63 elk licenses to participate in the second year of the Cody region Hunter Management and Access program near Meeteetse.

Hunt Management Coordinators Aaron McGuire and Brandon Tycz said that participating hunters will have an opportunity to pursue antlerless elk on private lands primarily in the Meeteetse Creek, Spring Creek, Gooseberry Creek, Wood River, or Greybull River drainages. “We’re trying to place hunters where the elk are to give them the best opportunity to harvest an animal,” they said.

The Cody Region Hunter Management and Access Program (HMAP) is designed to reduce elk numbers in hunt areas 61, 62, and 63 by increasing hunter access to private land. Increasing hunter access will help reduce growing numbers of elk in the Meeteetse area, will keep the herds within population objectives, and address the issue of potential transmission of brucellosis from elk to cattle.

The program will run through December 23 except for Hunt Area 61, which has a closing date of January 13. The program is open to persons with elk Hunt Area 61 type 4, 6, or 7 licenses, Hunt Area 62 type 4 or 5 licenses, and those with Hunt Area 63 type 4 or 6 licenses. McGuire and Tycz noted that hunters with Hunt Area 62 and 63 licenses are especially needed.

Applicants must apply online through the Game and Fish website at http://wgfd.wyo.gov. To apply, click on the Hunting tab, then choose Hunter Management Information. Look for the Meeteetse Creek (Area 61), Wood River (Area 62), or Gooseberry (Area 63) HMAP headings.

The online sign-up process is currently open to the public and will remain open for the remainder of the season. There will be two hunt periods per week; Tuesday though Wednesday and Friday through Sunday. Hunters will be only allowed to choose one hunt period and the sign-up process is on a first come, first serve basis. Hunt Areas 61 and 63 will allow 10 hunters to sign up per hunt period, while Hunt Area 62 will allow five hunters to sign up per hunt period. Once the limit has been reached, that hunt period will no longer be an available option.

Hunters are reminded that they will be required to walk some distances and must be able to retrieve harvested game from the field. All successful applicants are required to attend an orientation at the Meeteetse Recreation District building at 6 a.m. the first morning of each hunt period. Hunters will only be granted access to private lands on the days on which they signed up for in the presence of the hunt management coordinators.
