Conservation Stamp Art Contest Judging and Reception this Friday in Cheyenne

4/7/2014

CHEYENNE - Judging for the 31st annual Wyoming State Conservation Stamp Art Competition will be held Friday, April 11, at Wyoming Game and Fish Headquarters, 5400 Bishop Blvd. in Cheyenne. Subject for this year’s competition is the sauger.

This year’s competition features 38 entries from artists in 15 states. More than half (20) of the entries are from Wyoming artists. The winning artwork will be reproduced on the 2015 conservation stamp. A conservation stamp is required for most licensed hunters and anglers. Approximately 100,000 conservation stamps are printed each year.

Resembling a walleye, the sauger is one of Wyoming’s few native game fish and prefers living in large rivers, but is also present in reservoirs. In Wyoming, sauger are native to larger rivers and streams east of the Continental Divide where water is typically warmer than that preferred by trout. Today the fish are found in the Wind-Bighorn River drainage and in the Tongue and Powder River drainages. Prior to the era of dam building, sauger were common in the North Platte River, but they are no longer there.

Judging will take place on the afternoon of April 11. Following the judging, the Game and Fish Department will host a reception open to the public beginning at 5 p.m. with winners announced at 5:45 p.m. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

All paintings will remain on display at Game and Fish Headquarters through May 16.

This event would not be possible without the support of our sponsors, Wyoming Wildlife – The Foundation and Girls Gone Gourmet Catering, LLC.
