Conservation Stamp Art Contest Judging and Reception April 12
at Game and Fish Cheyenne Headquarters

3/25/2013

CHEYENNE - Judging and a reception for the 30th annual Wyoming Conservation Stamp Art Competition will be held Friday, April 12, at Wyoming Game and Fish Headquarters, 5400 Bishop Blvd. in Cheyenne. The ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) is the subject of this year’s competition.

Game and Fish has received 51 submissions this year from artists (in 19 states) competing for the right to have their work reproduced on the 2014 conservation stamp. A conservation stamp is required for most licensed hunters and anglers. Game and Fish prints approximately 100,000 conservation stamps annually.

Judging will take place the afternoon of April 12. Following judging, Wyoming Wildlife – The Foundation and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department will host a free public reception at 5 p.m. All paintings will be on display at the reception. Winners will be announced at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Each year Game and Fish selects one species to be the subject of the competition and eventually appear on more than100,000 conservation stamps. The ruffed grouse is a species common throughout the western forests of Wyoming and a small population is found in the Black Hills National Forest in the northeastern part of the state.

Last year’s contest subject was Wyoming’s state reptile, the greater short-horned lizard. The winning entry was by Virginia artist Karla Mann and is now featured on the 2013 Wyoming Conservation Stamp.

All paintings will remain on display at Game and Fish Headquarters through April 30.
