Bill Cowling Retires After 32 Years of Service

CHEYENNE - Game and Fish Habitat and Access Branch Chief Bill Cowling has retired after more than 32 years of service.
Cowling began his Game and Fish career as a seasonal worker on the statewide construction crew and later at the Sybille Wildlife Research Unit near Wheatland. In 1981 he transferred to Lovell serving as the construction foreman for the Cody and Sheridan regions. In 1984 he was promoted to statewide habitat development foreman stationed in Lander and in 1997 was promoted to the assistant chief of the habitat and access branch. In 2004 he was made chief of the habitat and access branch.
Cowling graduated from Lander Valley High School and attended Central Wyoming College before enrolling at the University of Wyoming, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management.
As habitat and access branch chief, Cowling supervised the largest work unit in the Game and Fish Services Division and played an important role in developing safety measures for various maintenance and construction projects as well as playing a lead role in the maintenance and operation of Game and Fish feedgrounds.
In 2006 he was named Services Division Employee of the year with the Game and Fish Department.
