Game and Fish Conducting Deer Hunter Survey

07/16/2012

CHEYENNE - If you’ve hunted deer in Wyoming since 2009 you could be getting a phone call through the next several weeks inquiring about your deer hunting preferences and perspectives.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is contacting 2,400 deer hunters – both residents and nonresidents – in their first survey of deer hunters since 2005.

“Getting information and feedback from our customers is a valuable part of our management,” said Susan Boston, Game and Fish human dimensions coordinator. “We’d like to know what management changes might be popular and what management hunters are happy with. The survey helps clear up unknowns.”

She said the department has learned a lot about the public’s perspectives of the Wyoming Range and Platte Valley mule deer herds the last three years through the Mule Deer Initiative, and the initiative continues to be a priority for the department. “This survey will help give us deer hunting perspectives on the other regions of the state,” Boston said.

The upcoming telephone survey will feature some of the issues brought up by hunters in the Wyoming Range and Platte Valley processes, including what types of things have an effect on the quality of a hunt and hunter perspectives on limited quota mule deer areas and regions.

“We’re just gathering information at this point and want to learn the public’s opinions on these issues,” Boston said.

The survey will be conducted by Responsive Management, a company with more than 25 years of experience specializing in natural resources surveys and one that has done an excellent job conducting previous Wyoming surveys, she added.

“The survey should take 15 to 20 minutes to complete and we really appreciate hunter’s time,” Boston said. “The more responses we get, the better.”

Boston says the Game and Fish will also be conducting a survey of elk hunters in November.
