Wyoming Educator's Learn how to Teach Outdoor Skills at Game and Fish Camp

06/25/2012

CHEYENNE - Wyoming educators and youth leaders recently spent four days at the Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp near Dubois learning about the outdoors, developing outdoor skills, and receiving instructions on teaching methods to incorporate outdoors and fish and wildlife activities into the classroom.

This year’s workshop was attended by 30 Wyoming educators and youth leaders and included a combination of the Game and Fish Department’s Outdoor Recreation Education Opportunities (O.R.E.O.) program and Project WILD activities. Educators were taught outdoor photography, outdoor survival skills, map and compass skills, fishing skills, shooting sports, staying safe in bear country, canoe safety, fish and wildlife conservation, and other outdoor activities.

In addition, a number of the educators became certified in the National Archery in the Schools program (NASP) and Project WILD.

“Outdoor recreation is part of Wyoming’s great history and can be part of classroom instruction,” said Tasha Sorensen Game and Fish coordinator who heads up the workshop. “Outdoor and wildlife activities can become a part of almost any curriculum in the classroom and youth activities. Science, history, math, physical education, English, social studies, elementary teachers, and others who work with youth learn how to incorporate new ideas with the curriculum they are already teaching.”

Educators and youth leaders interested in participating in next year’s camp can contact Tasha Sorensen at (307) 777-4536 or e-mail: tasha.sorensen@wyo.gov.
