The Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Forever Wild Families program harnesses the power of family and community to attract new hunters and anglers.
Forever Wild Families offers a series of customized outings for those with limited hunting or fishing experience. Unlike programs that recruit youth (and depend on participants to convince their parents/guardians to support their pursuit of hunting or fishing), the workshops involve entire families, who remain in the program until they graduate. Piloted in the Lander region of Wyoming, workshops are tailored to meet the families’ needs, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
As funding becomes available, program managers are expanding the program into new regions. The next class of family participants will come from the Cody area. If you are interested in getting involved with the program in Lander or Cody, contact email@example.com for more details.
The Wildlife Management Institute has identified Forever Wild Families as the best example nationwide of a recruitment and retention program.
The Forever Wild Family program has the potential to positively affect nationwide trends in hunting and fishing, while also creating active stakeholders for the conservation of wildlife. Families gain the skills necessary to safely and ethically pursue hunting, angling, and other forms of outdoor recreation on their own.
The Optimist Club of Cody has endorsed the importance of the Forever Wild Family program to the community. Sponsors include Sierra Trading Post, Wind River Mountain Outfitters, North Platte Walleyes Unlimited, Allwayz Manufacturing, Wyoming Wildlife Federation, Central Wyoming College/Sinks Canyon Center, Federal Ammunition, and PK Lures. Continued support by sponsors and foundations is paramount to program success.
